Energy for Singapore

Built for the nation, Senoko Power Station

Senoko Power Station is a combined cycle power station and the only power generation plant in northern Singapore. As one of the largest and most efficient power generation plants in town, Senoko Power Station has a licensed capacity of 2,644 megawatts (MW) and supplies about 20 per cent of the nation’s electricity needs.

The power plant originally operated under the Public Utilities Board (PUB) in Singapore between 1977 and 1995, and was subsequently divested to Singapore Power in 1995. After being acquired by a global consortium in 2008, the station is now wholly operated by Senoko Energy Pte Ltd.

Our Beginnings

During Singapore’s infancy stage of economic growth, the Public Utilities Board (PUB) saw the need to establish a reliable supply of electricity for the country.

In 1977, Senoko Power Station was built as part of PUB’s plan for energy self-reliance. Our inaugural station was located at the former British Naval Base, Sembawang. Officially unveiled on 31 July 1977 by then Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr S. Rajaratnam, the plant touted some of the most advanced technologies in that era, including a  3x120MW steam plant with computer-based control system and automatic data logging system for operations.

Breaking New Ground

Built on the tenet of innovation, we are constantly exploring cleaner and more efficient ways of generating energy.

1992: First power generation company in Singapore to import clean natural gas for power generation, reducing carbon emissions by 42%

1997: First to launch a combined cycle plant that ran on both natural gas and diesel, with a total generation capacity of 850MW

1998: Our first ISO certification — ISO 9001

Change is essential for growth. We underwent a series of changes that strengthened our corporate identity and direction

1995: Power Senoko Ltd was corporatised as a subsidiary of Singapore Power

2001: Power Senoko was divested from Singapore Power, to be part of Temasek Holdings on 1 April 2001. The company was renamed Senoko Power Ltd to support the liberalisation of Singapore’s energy market

2003: Senoko Energy started retailing energy to businesses, catering to varying consumption loads along the way: > 20MW (Year 2003), > 10MW (Year 2006), > 4MW (Year 2014), and >2MW (Year 2015)

2005: Completed a re-powering project. This involved replacing an oil-fired boiler with gas turbines and heat recovery steam generators, together with the upgrading of steam turbines

2008: Senoko Energy was divested from Temasek Holdings, to be part of Lion Power Consortium on 12 Sep 2008

2009: Senoko Services Pte Ltd was formed—a subsidiary of Senoko Energy to provide storage tank leasing and terminal services through Senoko Marine Operations Center (SMOC)

2024: Sembcorp Industries, through its subsidiary Sembcorp Utilities, acquired ENGIE’s 30% stake in Senoko Energy

2025: Sembcorp Industries and Marubeni Corporation increased their interest in Senoko Energy to 50% each by acquiring the shares of KPIC Netherlands, Kyuden International, and Japan Bank for International Cooperation

2008: Received the Singapore President’s Award for the Environment and the Singapore Watermark Award

2012: Certified ISO 22301 for achieving international standard for Business Continuity Management

2013: Certified ISO 50001 and ISO 27001, and won the inaugural Singapore Energy Award

2015: Winner of the inaugural NTUC uSAFE Sparks Award 2015, nominated by Union of Power & Gas Employees (UPAGE) for supporting Workplace Safety & Health (WSH)

2018: Following our success in the business sector, Senoko Energy was fully liberalised to serve the electricity needs of Singaporean households 

2021: Honourable mention in the Energy Efficiency National Partnership (EENP) Awards, Best Practices Category

2023: Ranked 18th by The Straits Times, Singapore's Best Employers  

2024: Awarded Singapore Business Review's Technology Excellence Awards 2024 for SolarShare, Singapore's first commercially available peer-to-peer grid-scale solar energy trading platform

2025: Awarded NTUC's Plaque of Commendation (Gold) at May Day Awards 2025 in recognition of our continued efforts to uplift the wages, welfare and work prospects of our employees

Journey towards Net Zero

Even before sustainability became a household word in this part of the world, we’ve been leading the charge and supporting Singapore in achieving net zero emissions by 2050.

2005: Launched Senoko Sustainability Challenge as a National Weather Study Project with a $1m sponsorship of mini weather stations in schools across Singapore

2011: First power-generation company to participate in EMA and LTA Electric Vehicle test-bed

2018:
- Rebranded as Senoko Energy with a new logo
- Launched first solar project, installing rooftop panels to help Continental Automotive Singapore generate 500MW hours of electricity a year

2021: Initiated pilot trial of Singapore’s first peer-to-peer green energy trading platform, SolarShare, to drive solar adoption in our city

Interestingly through the years, our premises have become home to 6 species of mammals, 28 species of birds, 7 species of reptiles & amphibians, 17 marine wildlife, and 8 species of fruit trees.
During COVID-19, some 30 cats decided to make Senoko Power Station their home after neighbouring facilities shut down. Good thing was, we were a bunch of cat lovers, so they made a purr-fect part of the Senoko Energy fam.

In Singapore,  there are a total of six bomb shelters left behind from World War II;  two of which are here within the Senoko premises. Also known as bunkers, these wartime relics were built to protect our people and weapons against air raids.

Executive Committee

The Executive Committee was formed to assist the Board and is responsible for supervising the management of the Group's operations within the limits of the executive power delegated by the Board.

It also oversees the day-to-day business operations and the implementation of strategies and policies of the Group, meeting regularly to review the progress of corporate development projects and business performance.
